A-Level results day is here!

A-level results day is here, which means that a lot of you will be making definitive decisions on your post-school/college plans. For those who do not achieve the required results, and do not wish to take up an offer through clearing, a gap year may be the ideal option - allowing for time off to reevaluate your future path without making any hasty decisions.

The gap year phenomenon

Traditionally a gap year is a time characterised by time away from education, either between school and university or immediately after university - but a gap year can truly be taken at any time.

During this time you can focus on things that you wouldn’t normally do, and develop your experience of the world. It’s a time to get away from the day to day, whether that’s at school, at work, or at home, and have the freedom to fulfil a dream.

When it comes to gap years, more students are looking for experiences that will not only prove enjoyable, but also fuel their CVs. Self-development is key, and it would be wise to think about how this could be useful to you.

The next step

If, following results day and leading into clearing, you don't already hold a deferred offer you can contact the uni directly and ask if they can defer you. It's best to do this as soon as you know you want to defer, but theoretically you can do it right up until the start date.

You may also decide that you need some time to think about going to uni. What seemed like a great idea last October is now feeling a bit less certain. Or you have no confirmed place and you've decided that Clearing isn't for you. Or maybe you're just unhappy with what you have ended up with and you now want to have a gap year and reapply again next year. Whatever the reason, you are not without options.
