Projects Abroad volunteer diving with marine life in Belize.

This project is a great way to learn about preserving marine life while benefiting the local community. You will spend your first few days participating in an Open Water certification course. In shallow waters, you’ll learn how to breathe underwater, clear your mask and equalise pressure. You will also become familiar with the buddy system and practise using underwater sign language.

Once you have your diving certification, you will start participating in conservation activities with our local staff. Projects Abroad holds a research permit from the government Fisheries Department. This permit allows us to work in three important marine parks in the Belize Barrier Reef Systems, located near Placencia. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important ecosystem for many species, including whale sharks.

You will get involved in a variety of tasks during your time abroad. These include: salvage dives to clean-up the reefs and surrounding seabed, marine wildlife surveys and beach clean-ups. The project also has a land-based community aspect, where you will do physical work to improve a local public area such as painting a classroom or refurbishing a playground.

Over the weekend, depending on weather, you will travel with the other volunteers and our staff to visit a nearby island or a Mayan ruin. This is a great opportunity to relax and have fun with everyone while exploring a new country and culture.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2017 High School Specials Impact Report.
