Nutrition in Bolivia

Projects Abroad works with partner organisation, Centro de Nutrición Infantil Albina Patiño, a nutritional day care centre based in Cochabamba. The centre aims to support families in an impoverished community called Cerro Verde, who have been affected by malnutrition and who suffer from nutritional deficiencies.

Volunteers should speak Spanish at an intermediate level. You can get involved as part of a gap year, career break or extended holiday. A minimum of 4 weeks commitment is required for this Nutrition project. You can get involved as part of a gap year, career break or extended holiday.

Volunteering in Bolivia on the Nutrition Project

Currently, it is estimated that one in every three children in Bolivia suffers from malnutrition; this is the second highest amount in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is believed that poverty, poor health systems and the lack of awareness relating to nutrition are all factors influencing the increase of malnourishment in Bolivia.

This volunteer programme aims to alleviate malnourishment by improving nutritional awareness and providing Projects Abroad volunteers with valuable first-hand experience in nutritional work in a developing country.

As a volunteer on this placement, you will be based at Centro de Nutrición Infantil Albina Patiño. Your work will consist of rehabilitating and caring for children, outreach work and providing education through awareness campaigns to help the community overcome the ever growing problem of malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies.

Your Role as a Volunteer on the Nutrition Project

As a Projects Abroad volunteer, you will have the opportunity to take on three roles within this nutritional programme, working primarily in the city of Cochabamba.

In Cochabamba, the majority of volunteers will spend their time working directly with malnourished children who have been dropped off at the centre by their parents. Volunteers will spend quality time with the children and feed them on a daily basis until they recover and can return home to their parents. Volunteers here work with children from 0 to 5 years old.

The second role of volunteers is to assist staff by carrying out outreach programmes (home visits) to check up on children that have left the centre. These visits will confirm if parents are following the diets given to them and check if any new cases of malnutrition have occurred.

Volunteers also get involved with creating nutrition awareness campaigns for the Cerro Verde community.

As a volunteer you will work in the mornings from 8am to 12 noon and in the afternoons from 2pm to 6pm. Schedules may vary depending on the needs of the centre.
