Khmer Language Course in Cambodia

The benefit of learning Cambodia’s official language during your placement is a wonderful way to gain better insight into the local community and learn more about the native culture and traditions.

The Khmer Language Course is offered in the Capital city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. As the second most widely spoken language in continental Southeast Asia, more than 16 million people speak it across many countries, including Thailand and Vietnam.

Upon arrival, after you have settled in and met the Projects Abroad Cambodia staff, you’ll be introduced to your language tutor.

You and your private tutor will decide on the structure of your lessons. Together, you will work on the outline of each tutoring session based on your interests, what topics you want to cover, your current language level, and decide on your weekly lesson timetable.

If you are not doing a standalone language course, you can also undertake a short 5-hour, 14-hour, or 30-hour language course in Khmer, which will run alongside your main volunteer project or internship. If you are planning to volunteer abroad for twelve weeks or more, you could also complete a 60-hour course alongside your project. This way, your improved language skills will help you communicate more effectively at your placement, allowing you to practice with our staff and the people in the community.

In Cambodia, your weekends and free time can be spent exploring the ancient temples near Siem Reap, relaxing on the beach in Sihanoukville, eating traditional Khmer curry with rice noodles, and - most importantly - practicing your Khmer with the people you’ll meet along the way.
