A young girl and a Projects Abroad volunteer read together in Ghana

Based in Cape Coast, our two-week Care & Community project in Ghana is a great introduction for first-timers in Africa. Although Ghana is still a developing country, it is safe and locals are warm and welcoming. During this project, you will be working with children from many different backgrounds, helping to provide a stimulating and engaging environment for them.

In the mornings you will be interacting with the children at care centres or children’s homes, running educational games and group activities, and helping improve hygiene practices. All the activities will be focused on helping us work towards our long-term early childhood development goals for each child, built around our Care Management Plans for each placement. You will also support the local staff, and help with daily tasks and maintenance of the facilities.

In the afternoons you will be involved in community work, assisting with tasks such as renovation work, gardening and other activities to help uplift the local community. You will also have the opportunity to take part in a reading group at a local football club.

You will live with a local host family in Ghana, which is a great way to truly experience their way of life. The local staff also organise fun social events for volunteers, often hosting quiz nights and sharing Ghanaian traditions with the group. On the weekend, our volunteers are treated to a safari beach trip and a visit to the old slave fort and the canopy walkway at Kakum National Park.
