Volunteer in Ghana treats child on outreach programme

You will come into contact with conditions that you wouldn't normally see in Europe and North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis. Nursing methods will also be different from what you are used to and here will be much for you to experience and learn. You will shadow one of our supervisors who all speak English and are very experienced at working with nursing students. They will be keen to test out your nursing experience, as well as giving you the benefit of their training and knowledge.

Our Nursing Elective programmes in Ghana are based in Cape Coast. You will be working in a bustling city hospital, working with patients who have a wide range of illnesses.

Supervision on your Elective Placement

When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with the Projects Abroad coordinator and the placement supervisor who will be a member of the hospital staff. If you are specialising in a specific area of nursing, then discuss this with us as we will ensure you are able to develop a programme of study to support this. Many students choose to spend time in a variety of different departments within the hospital, including accident and emergency, paediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physiotherapy and surgery.

Students on Nursing Electives are also encouraged to take part in regular medical outreach work, which involves treating children with minor wounds or illnesses from small villages or paying a visit to a care centre for example. Those on a Nursing Elective wanting to specialise in the outreach work can join a full time Public Health project based in Dodowa, on the outskirts of Accra. Anyone interested in working with HIV and AIDS patients could join our HIV/AIDS control programme based in a hospital in Accra which also includes community outreach work.

During your stay in Ghana you will live with local host-families. As one of our most popular destinations, there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community to spend time with.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
