Rugby in Ghana is an emerging sport, with many Ghanaians now discovering its attractions. It is a sport well suited to Ghana as it combines athleticism, awareness and speed - all of which Ghanaians seem to possess in abundance. But up until now it is a sport which has barely penetrated Africa, other than in the far south of the continent.

Coach Rugby to children with Projects Abroad

Volunteer rugby coaching opportunities in Ghana

Volunteers in Ghana have the opportunity to coach rugby in schools in Cape Coast. Projects Abroad works alongside a respected local rugby coach, George Avoola Ladipo; the coach of the Junior National Rugby team in Ghana. George aims to help develop the sport in the whole Cape Coast Region. He is a qualified coach and is very happy to pass on some of his coaching skills and experience to willing volunteers who are prepared to help him in his quest to bring rugby to this sports-mad country!

Your Role Volunteering Abroad on a Rugby Project in Ghana

Volunteers coach both primary school children and secondary school children, aged between 12 and 18. As a volunteer you will participate in the following activities:

  • Help in planning the central and western rugby league
  • Planning and training towards the September Cape Coast festival beach rugby competition
  • Engage in training some of the school sports teachers
  • Training the children and adults within the various rugby clubs
  • Beach rugby training

This is a great opportunity for anyone passionate about rugby to get involved in the development of the project. You will be able to pass your enthusiasm for rugby on to a new generation of youngsters and - who knows - in a few years’ time you may even find that you have been coaching members of the first national Ghanaian rugby team!

Programme Schedule

Our rugby programme is most effective when schools are in session, especially at the beginning of the school terms. The best months to come for rugby are in February/March, May/June as well as September through to November. If you cannot join the project during these months, you may still participate in the project, but it is best combined with a care or teaching project, as the training will be in the afternoons only. Upon arrival your daily programme will be discussed with the project supervisor.

The training times are as follows:

Gap Year rugby coaching projects in Ghana

12:00 noon - 3:00pm
3:30pm - 4:30pm
4:30pm - 5:30pm

You can join the Rugby project in Ghana for one, two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
