Volunteers joining the HIV/AIDS project in Jamaica work with a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) which focuses on community outreach work, support for people living with HIV/AIDS, research and training. The aim of the project is to assist the most vulnerable people in the local communities who are living with HIV and AIDS, relating to treatment, care and support. In addition, an important aspect of the project relates to raising awareness and educating adolescents and young adults about HIV/AIDS.
In Jamaica, it is estimated that 32,000 people are living with HIV and as many as 50% are unaware of their status, with an estimated HIV prevalence rate of 1.7%. Although HIV/AIDS cases have decreased in the adult population with fewer infections and deaths, there have been more reported cases of new infections amongst young people.
The NGO we partner with is the oldest and largest HIV/AIDS organisation in Jamaica and has been running since 1991. Volunteers are based in the Mandeville office.
HIV/AIDS Community Outreach work
Volunteers visit local communities and provide information to the residents about HIV and AIDS; this includes giving out informative leaflets and practical demonstrations of safe condom use, for example. In addition, you may visit local high schools and universities to give presentations and set up displays in the communities.
Anyone with a talent in drama could put together plays or sketches that will help raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in an interactive way that will appeal to young people and adults alike.
HIV/AIDS Support in Jamaica
Volunteers work closely with people living with HIV/AIDS who visit the NGO’s premises each week by providing them with information on ways to deal with the virus. You will also have the opportunity to educate, provide support and help to develop programmes relating to the socio-economic needs of infected people.
As part of the project, you can also assist with research on trends in the local community relating to HIV and AIDS and can help to identify programmes and resources that are available for people affected by the disease.
Volunteers who join the HIV/AIDS project will be given training about HIV/AIDS specific to the current situation in Jamaica.
You can join the HIV/AIDS project in Jamaica for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
