Our in-country staff are on hand to help you organise your trip and answer your questions. In Mexico, you will have a supervisor who is a qualified member of the medical staff. They will mentor you throughout your stay, and will be available to discuss case studies with you. Your supervisor will ensure you learn as much as possible about nursing and healthcare practice in Mexico.

Your Role on a Nursing Elective

A Nursing student volunteer and local doctor examine patient

Elective students take on a mainly observational role. While all your work will be based in a hospital, you will be able to rotate between different departments to see a variety of treatments. You can also choose to specialise in a certain area if you prefer. Departments include gynaecology, paediatrics, and surgery. How much hands on work you will get depends upon the hospital and your previous experience and qualifications.

By showing initiative and building a good rapport with your colleagues, you can get very involved with the doctors and patients with whom you are working. You could help clean wounds, put in IVs, put on casts, help with stitching and generally assist the doctors. Hospital units are fast paced and you need to be energetic and enthusiastic.

Requirements for Nursing Electives

Elective students need to speak some Spanish to join our Mexican Nursing Elective programme. If you are unsure as to whether your Spanish is good enough for the programme please give us a call. Many students who lack confidence in their Spanish language skills join a Teaching, Care, Community or Spanish Language project before joining their elective programme. This gives them the opportunity to brush up their language skills before the medical part of their placement.

Elective students in Mexico live with local host families. You will immerse yourself in the Mexican day-to-day life. You can explore Guadalajara and the surrounding area with our very active Projects Abroad volunteer community.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
