Volunteering on a Medicine project in Mexico is a fast-paced and exciting experience. As a Medicine volunteer you will gain a great deal of valuable work experience. Hospitals in Mexico are well equipped and near the standards of Western hospitals. Projects Abroad works with Cruz Verde hospital, which is for people who are excluded from the healthcare system, in addition to Hospitalito, which is for people working in the private sector.

As a volunteer in medicine, you will rotate throughout different departments and take on a mainly observational role. How much hands on work you will get depends upon the hospital and your previous experience and qualifications. If you wish to specialise in one area of medicine then we can organise that for you. You can choose from departments including gynaecology, haematology, paediatrics, pathology, anaesthesiology and surgery. Other options include emergency response, internal medicine, orthopaedics, obstetrics, plastic surgery and physiotherapy. Your supervisor will ensure you learn as much as possible about medical practice in Mexico.

Doctors and nurses welcome volunteers with a range of experience, so long as they are enthusiastic and keen to participate. By showing initiative and building a good rapport with your colleagues, you can get very involved with the doctors and patients with whom you are working. It is often the case that a volunteers work with a local medicine student, doctor or nurse who speaks English, but this is not guaranteed.

Outreach Work in Mexico

A young child gets a health check from a medical volunteer in Mexico

Volunteers on medical projects in Mexico usually have the opportunity to visit one of our care placements and give health workshops on topics like dental care and hygiene. Medical outreaches are normally done once a month at a community centre, but busy months can have up to 10 medical camps. People from different areas will be invited, and volunteers will receive training before they start.

Volunteers need to speak some Spanish to join our Mexican Medicine programme. If you are unsure as to whether your Spanish is good enough for the programme please give us a call. Many volunteers who lack confidence in their Spanish language skills join a Teaching, Care, Community or Spanish Language project before joining their Medicine programme. This gives them the opportunity to brush up their language skills before the medical part of their placement.

Volunteers need to be a minimum of 18yrs of age to take part on the medicine project.

While volunteering in Mexico you will live with local host families. Here you will be able to really improve your Spanish and immerse yourself in the Mexican day-to-day life. You can explore Guadalajara with the very active Projects Abroad volunteer community.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Mexico Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

"I remember my first time helping during a solo operation with the resident, the fear and excitement I felt, and I remember seeing my first perforated appendix. There were times when the resident and I did solo operations while the intern and the head surgeon performed surgery in an adjacent operating room. We saved a lot of time by splitting into teams."
