A volunteer helps children with a warm up in Romania

You can coach football in Romania with Projects Abroad and help to pass on your knowledge and learn new skills. There are two different placements available, coaching children and young adults ranging from 8-15 years of age.

Football is a very popular sport in Romania and the local children and coaches are always keen to learn new ideas and techniques from other countries. Some of the children are focusing on a professional career in the sport, while others simply want to keep fit and have fun with their friends.

Coaching at a Football Centre

Volunteers with previous coaching experience can work with a local football centre that offers training at several grounds around the city of Brasov. The children at this centre have been selected on ability and take the sport seriously. This is the perfect option for someone who is looking to build on existing coaching skills, or an experienced coach looking to pass on knowledge.

The training covers all areas, including physical preparation, technique, and tactics. You will be working alongside local coaches who will be keen to learn from you and pass on their knowledge.

Coaching at a Youth Centre

For those volunteers not looking for a professional ‘academy-style’ placement, or for those with less experience, we also work at a youth centre called Domino. This centre is for children and young adults with behavioural problems. Here you will lead training sessions independently, focusing on participation and fun. The aim is for the children to enjoy their football, stay active, and learn about teamwork and responsibility. The centre has very limited resources so you will need to be creative with your sessions.

Weekly Schedule

In both placements volunteers work from Monday to Friday with their weekends free. However, the children you will be coaching are all in full-time education so there are normally only 2 hours of coaching each day. This means that you will need to combine your football coaching with work on our Teaching or Care projects each day. You can tell us your preferred option when you apply or discuss it with our staff before you arrive.

You can join a Sports project in Romania for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
