Print Journalism in Samoa

Journalism project staff and volunteers in their office, Samoa

Based in Apia, the Print Journalism placement provides the perfect opportunity for those wanting to break into the competitive world of print journalism and is ideal for journalism students who are eager to gain practical experience and build a portfolio.

By choosing this option, your primary role would be that of a reporter and on a daily basis you will have the chance to research and write on a variety of topics of your own interest. Depending on your interests, you will also have the option to practise your photography, website design or social media management skills. Volunteers have constant support from local journalists whilst on their placement and will be able to shadow local reporters to learn more about journalism in Samoa.

Volunteers can expect to work from 8.30am to 5.30pm from Monday to Friday, but may be asked to work on certain weekends. It is recommended that you bring your own laptop and camera; however there will be shared equipment available. Journalism volunteers in Samoa should have a good command of the English language.

There is also the option to work with Talamua Media and Publication Ltd, a multimedia company offering media consultancy services. Volunteers will have the opportunity to get involved in the print aspect of the company, helping to develop a national directory, as well as the online journalism aspect.

Radio Journalism in Samoa

Journalism volunteer at the radio station in Samoa

Radio Polynesia is based in Apia and currently owns four radio stations, all of which are music stations, but each caters to a different audience. Volunteers who decide on the Radio Journalism option will have the opportunity to experience working at a live radio station and therefore should have a strong interest in radio, music production and broadcasting.

If you decide on this option, you may be asked to help run the radio station’s website and social media accounts. You will also assist in all areas of running the station, from administration and marketing to research and broadcasting. Volunteers do not need any qualifications for this option, but experience in advertising, marketing, IT, sound or broadcast engineering and radio transmission would serve as an advantage.

All Journalism volunteers live with a local host family and need to spend a minimum of four weeks on the placement.
