No Prior Teaching Qualifications Required

Volunteering as a teacher in Samoa is a fantastic way to get involved in the local community. You can gain invaluable teaching work experience without any previous qualifications, and you are not required to have undergone TEFL training.

Whether you are coming to volunteer during your gap year, career break or an extended holiday, the impact you have on the lives of your students will be long-lasting. You will also be part of a much larger volunteer network, which is making a really positive contribution to the wider community.

Samoa is becoming increasingly urbanised and speaking good English is essential for getting a good job, both in the booming tourist industry and in other areas of business.

Teaching Placements in Samoa

Projects Abroad is based in Apia, the capital of Samoa on the island of Upolu. Volunteers work in primary and secondary schools in and around Apia. We can also offer Teaching placements in one of the more rural villages.

English is one of Samoa’s official languages, (Samoan is the other) and it is a major educational goal to make all Samoans bilingual. All lessons are taught in English by midway through primary school.

Work with Samoan Staff

The class sizes can often be large in Apia, with up to 65 students in a class, so your help will be appreciated. As a volunteer teacher you will often start by working alongside the local Samoan staff to help improve conversational English, as well as assisting with other subjects in the curriculum.

Through assisting with lessons and introducing fun and interactive ways of learning, like games and songs you can improve the student’s enthusiasm and develop their confidence. They are sure to be interested in you and your life, and you can take advantage of this to get them talking about a wide variety of topics.

Teach Sports and Other Subjects

It is also possible to teach other subjects alongside your English lessons. Volunteers who are happy to teach some sports, particularly cricket or rugby will be in demand. If you have any other interests or subjects you would like to teach – such as maths, science, IT or art - we can match you to a school where you can incorporate these skills. Please let us know when you apply if you are interested in teaching additional subjects.

Participate in Teaching Workshops

The Projects Abroad team in Samoa organise regular workshops for our Teaching volunteers. The workshops will provide you with an important overview of the Samoan system of education and the background of the school where you’re working. You will also receive advice regarding maintaining discipline in the classroom, lesson planning and activities to carry out at your Teaching placement.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Samoa Teaching Management Plan.
