Volunteering in Midwifery in Senegal will provide you with an eye opening and exciting opportunity to experience maternity care in some of the poorest medical institutions in the developing world. As a Midwifery volunteer in Senegal you will have the opportunity to gain insight into how a midwifery practice operates with poor facilities and lack of funds.

You will be placed a hospital maternity unit. Here you will work with staff throughout the maternity unit. You can be involved in pre-natal and post-natal care, as well as the labour itself; and by becoming part of the team and showing eagerness to get involved, you may get given more to do. In some of our placements you could also be involved in gynaecology and family planning.

Facilities in Senegal

All Midwifery volunteers should be aware that the facilities they will be working at are basic, and treatments are sometimes not of the standard you would expect, coming from a more developed country. You could witness challenging births and you are advised not to get emotionally involved with the patients.

Your exact working hours will usually be decided on a weekly basis, in cooperation with your supervisor and a Projects Abroad staff member.

Requirements for Midwifery Volunteers

Volunteer Midwifery Projects in Senegal

All Midwifery volunteers in Senegal must be recent graduates or qualified midwives by the time they join this project.

Volunteers also need a good level of conversational French. It is really important you can communicate in French because most of the staff and patients do not speak English. A copy of your CV will be requested after you have applied, so each placement can be tailored to your level of experience and interests.

When volunteering in Senegal, you will live with a local host family. You will be able to improve your French speaking skills and will also be able to pick up some Wolof, the local language. Many of our host families live in close proximity to each other so socialising with other volunteers is easy. There is a lot see and explore in the local area.

If you do not have the required experience to be accepted on one of our Midwifery placements then you may be interested in our Care placements in Senegal.
