Why choose to do my Medical Elective abroad?

Completing a Medical Elective in a developing country will expose you to techniques and illnesses that are rarely seen in the UK. Working in a limited-resource environment will also push you to become more innovative and force you to seek creative solutions to medical problems. Often, cases are more advanced than you would see in a Western hospital, due to a patient’s inability to pay for initial treatment.

You’ll get the chance to learn alongside skilled local professionals, who will share their knowledge and teach you about the healthcare issues of your host country. While abroad, you will also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, and experience life with a host family.

It’s a challenge, but a rewarding one. Expand your horizons and gain medical expertise on a worthwhile Elective placement abroad, which can be tailor-made to suit your interests and requirements. Kickstart your future career in the healthcare field with a new skillset and a broader knowledge of global medical issues.

What type of Electives can I do?

Projects Abroad currently offer seven different Elective placements for university students:

  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Dentistry
  • Midwifery
  • Pharmacy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy

Students are able to specify which department they’d like to work in. Nursing students, for example, could specialise in adult or child nursing. Medical students can choose from a range of options, including A&E, Orthopaedics and Obstetrics. Some students prefer to rotate around a number of different departments. Let us know your preference when you apply!

Why choose Projects Abroad for my Elective?

Projects Abroad has over 24 years of experience collaborating with medical professionals. We know how to arrange a placement that meets your requirements and gives you a full and rewarding experience of the country in which you are based. Unlike other providers, our Electives are offered in many destinations around the world, so you have a wide range of exciting options to choose from.

We arrange your accommodation, meals, insurance, and transport to and from your placement where necessary. You will be supervised by seasoned medical professionals at your placement, whether you’re working at a hospital, clinic or a practice dedicated to your specialism.

Finally, Projects Abroad provide strong pre-departure and 24/7 in-country support to make sure your time abroad runs as smoothly as possible.

Claire Kirkwood, Conservation & Environment volunteer in Kenya"My whole experience from start to finish with Projects Abroad was amazing. I couldn’t fault it. They were so helpful and understanding about what I wanted from them. At first I was unsure about what area of the world I wanted to do my nursing elective in. I chatted with an advisor online who helped provide me with some inside knowledge of the areas available to me. The website was so helpful with a checklist of things I needed to have completed before I went such as visas, flights etc.

In the end I went to Sri Lanka, and I am so glad this is where I got to do my elective. Not only were the staff at Projects Abroad helpful in supporting me through my experience, but my host family was amazing too! So friendly, and the food was authentic and catered to my vegetarian diet. I got to meet volunteers from around the world that I still keep in touch with. My elective was so educational, I was working in the emergency department in a local hospital in the southern part of the island. I learned so much in my time there.
I recommend this to anyone who want an educational and amazing experience in a beautiful country."
