Volunteering on a Pharmacy Project in Ghana

A Projects Abroad Pharmacy volunteer on a medical outreach in Ghana

You will work at a teaching hospital or a local pharmacy under the supervision of a qualified pharmacy manager or a clinical pharmacist. They will be there to support you throughout your project.

You will observe and help the local staff; learning more about their pharmaceutical practices as they assist patients on a daily basis. This will also give you the opportunity to engage with the patients and learn more about their medical conditions and how they are treated.

Your Role as a Pharmacy Volunteer

Your main role will be to assist the local pharmacists during their daily pharmaceutical duties. You will accompany them when completing ward rounds with the pharmacy and medical teams, assist with clinical pharmacy practices and observe the pharmaceutical team during dispensing. You will also interact with the patients as they are advised on the proper use of their medication.

Many small villages and outlying communities are unable to access or receive medical attention which is why you will be taking part in regular outreach projects. You will help provide the local community with the care that they would not normally have access to, and under supervision, you will be able to provide them with the medication they have been prescribed by local doctors.

During your project, you will live with a local host family. This is a great way to learn about a new culture and they will also be able to give you advice on what to see and do. When you aren’t at your host family or working at your placement, you will have the opportunity to spend time with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore Ghana together.
