If you are thinking about volunteering abroad as a physiotherapist, then why not choose Mongolia. You will learn a lot here as the facilities are generally of a basic standard and you may need to be creative in order to provide a good level of service. Patients will often have travelled vast distances to attend appointments and have surgery. You will help with both inpatient and outpatient care.

Physiotherapy projects in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar and you will be based in a physiotherapy department of a hospital. There are also a number of private complementary medical clinics where you can spend some time, to help broaden your physiotherapy experience.

Volunteer Physiotherapy Projects in Mongolia

Volunteer physiotherapists in Mongolia have a mixed role. You will partly have an observational role, shadowing the doctors, nurses and other physiotherapists while they work. You will also usually have the chance of some hands-on work, helping patients with physiotherapy exercises using specific equipment. The staff are keen for you to achieve as much as possible during your placement. If you are enthusiastic and show your skills to your fellow staff, you may well increase the amount of hands-on work you get offered. The supervisors on our physiotherapy placements in Mongolia have a lot of time for keen volunteers.

Outreach Projects in Mongolia

Projects Abroad organises regular medical outreach work for volunteers in order for you to gain a greater understanding of the Mongolian healthcare system. Although these are not always directly related to physiotherapy, you may wish to take part to learn about other aspects of the medical profession in Mongolia.

Previous outreach programmes have included basic medical check-ups at a community centre for homeless people, or assisting with a hand hygiene campaign at one of the local hospitals. We also offer monthly workshops for volunteers. These may be lessons about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system and practical lessons on basic medical procedures - such as how to check blood pressure.

While you volunteer on the physiotherapy project, you will live with a Mongolian host family. They are extremely hospitable and welcoming and you will become part of their family while you stay with them. You will also meet other Projects Abroad volunteers. There is a lot to see and do in the area and a lively bunch of volunteers to experience it with.
